eBook Reprint Rights License
The web is
one giant publishing experiment and the eBook is a big
part. An eBook reprint rights license agreement is a
must for authors and parties looking to market them.
eBook License
The one thing I love about the web more than
anything is the way deals come together between
parties. The idea of Steven King licensing one of his
new novels to some random distribution company just
isn't going to happen because his publisher is going to
be stepping into the fray first. Yet on the web, this
is pretty much marketing approach 101 for authors and
eBook publishers. This is becoming an even larger part
of the marketing segment when you consider that many
people are now publishing their own eBooks on Amazon
and iTunes without involving traditional publishers.
The problem most authors face is they need
to get their eBook out in front of the public, but
without losing control of it. An author is
automatically granted copyright on their "work" when
they create it, but that copyright can be transferred
in an agreement. Most authors do not know this and can
mistakenly sign away their efforts. You tend to see
classic examples of this in the recording industries
where bands sign away their publishing rights.
An eBook reprint rights license is an
agreement that sets forth a deal between an author and
a party that will market the book. The agreement nails
down things like copyright, the scope of use, the
licensing fees that will be paid and the length of the
agreement. This last factor is one that is particularly
important. How long will the deal last? Generally, you
want to limit it to some specific time period so that
you don't get tied down in a deal that may not produce
for you.
From the marketer's point of view, this type
of Agreement is also something you should want. Why? It
sets for the specifics of your right to use the
material, which precludes the author coming back later
and demanding more money or the sudden end of the
license. Either would be a disaster.
