About - Richard A. Chapo, Esq.

If you are considering hiring an attorney, you need to be comfortable with your choice. Knowledge is the key to making the right decision, so you should probably know the following about me.

I grew up in Del Mar. After graduating from Torrey Pines High School, I attended the University of California at Irvine where I obtained a degree in psychology. Degree in hand, I did the next logical thing – went backpacking in Europe for six months or so.

Following indirect and then very direct threats of being disowned by my family, I returned to the states in 1989. Realizing a psychology degree probably wasn’t going to get me far, I enrolled in law school. I graduated three years later in 1989 from California Western School of Law here in San Diego and passed the bar that same summer. The next eight years were spent working in the business litigation firm of Sulzner & Belsky, which subsequently became Sulzner & Associates.

In 1999, it was time for a bit of an adventure. I accepted a position teaching business law at Chita State Technical University in Russia. Chita is a city in Siberia, which has historically been off limits to non-Russians. It was an amazing experience and I did extensive research on both the developing legal infrastructure of the “new Russia” and the process and art of drinking vodka – often at the same time!

Upon my return to San Diego in 2000, I decided to strike out on my own. I have been practicing since then and have helped more than a few businesses get up and running.

As you can tell from this page, I prefer to conduct business on a more informal basis with my clients. I believe the “stodgy lawyer” act makes clients uncomfortable and hesitant to voice questions and concerns. This is problematic since my intention is to help you with your business, not lecture you like a wayward child. If you prefer a lawyer in wingtips and a three-piece suit, you probably should visit some other sites. Just being honest. I know, hard to believe with an attorney!

Cheers,

Richard
